Oilwick Lamps

Wardin Marking.JPG - R.B.WARDIN - Tin and brass face lamp, marked R.B.WARDIN, PHILA. 2 1/2 in tall (The R. B. Wardin marked lamp is one of the rarest of the branded oilwick lamps. An excellent article by Dave Johnson notes that Wardin was one of a large number of small-time producers of tinware products that also provided oilwick lamps for the local trade. Wardin was first listed in the 1865-66 Philadelphia City Directory in the business of tinplating and later as a producer of tinware at a variety of addresses until 1888. After a failed partnership in 1889, he continues to be listed in numerous business endeavors including salesman, investments, cigars and superintendent through 1912. The scarcity of Wardin marked lamps would indicate that his business in tinware from 1865 to 1888 produced only a few oilwick lamps. see Johnson, Mining Artifact Collector #12, p 7)
